False friends

               Reading the title many of us could have thought that I'm going to write about people who hurt me, but I have to dissapoint you... False friends are words which are very similar in two or more languages, but which have different meaning, and that's why sometimes confuse us. I'd like to present some useful false friends present in English and Polish.

* actual ( real) / aktualny (present, current)
* advocate (supporter) / adwokat (barrister)
* affair (romance)/ afera (scandal)
* assist ( help) / asystować (accompany)
* chef (head cook)/ szef (boss)
* closet (cupboard)/ klozet (toilet)
* consequent (resulting)/ konsekwentny (consistent, constant)
* data (information)/ data (date)
* eventual (final, ultimate) / ewentualny (possible)
* fatal (mortal)/ fatalny (terrible)
* genial (friendly) / genialny (of genius)
* hazard (danger) / hazard (gambling)
* lecture ( a speech)/ lektura (book)
